Game Drive in Kruger National Park

A Kruger game drive usually happens in the morning or evening, when animals are most active. Mobile signal is generally good in the rest camps but unreliable on the roads between them — download offline maps beforehand.

What to expect

A game drive is the core activity of any Kruger trip: slow driving along the park roads (or off them on guided tours), looking for lions, elephants, giraffes and the rest of the "Big Five". Self-drive guests use their own rental car; guided tours use open safari vehicles with an experienced guide and a higher vantage point.

Best time

Early morning (shortly after gate opening) and late afternoon are when animals are most active — most camps offer sunrise and sunset drives accordingly.

Practical notes

  • Stay in the vehicle except at designated picnic spots.
  • Download an offline map of the park before you arrive — mobile signal is often patchy between camps.
  • The rest camps (e.g. Skukuza, Satara) generally have better reception than the open road between them.
