What to expect
At Boulders Beach near Simon's Town, about an hour south of Cape Town, a colony of African penguins lives right among the granite boulders of the bay. Access is via the Table Mountain National Park boardwalks — the penguins often come right up to the path. No boat or guided tour is needed, and the visit combines well with a one-day Cape Peninsula drive.
Best time
The colony is there year-round. Early morning and later afternoon are more pleasant, with fewer tour groups around and penguins less likely to be hiding from the midday heat.
Practical notes
- Entry to the colony area is paid on site at the gate — plan for that rather than relying on an online booking en route.
- Stay on the boardwalks. The colony is a protected area, and African penguins will bite if crowded.
- Simon's Town itself is an ordinary town with urban network coverage — uploading photos or reloading maps works without trouble here.
