What to expect

Table Mountain can be climbed via several routes, from the popular Platteklip Gorge (a direct, well-maintained path) to more demanding routes like Skeleton Gorge. Alternatively, the cableway gets you to the top in minutes — convenient if you just want the view, but the hike is the real experience.

Best time

Start early to avoid the heat and the afternoon cloud ("tablecloth") — the mountain closes in strong wind or fog, so check conditions beforehand.

Practical notes

  • Bring plenty of water — there's almost no shade.
  • Weather can change fast — even in summer it gets cold and windy at the top.
Data usage for this activity

At the base and summit of Table Mountain, coverage is generally good given the proximity to the city — but on the hiking paths in between, especially in the gorges, signal can drop out at times.
