What to expect

Between June and December, southern right whales move to the Garden Route coast to calve — towns like Hermanus and Plettenberg Bay are among the best-known whale-watching spots in the world, often viewable directly from cliff paths without needing a boat. Alongside boat trips, there are guided coastal walks where guides point out good viewing spots.

July to October is peak season, usually cresting around September.

Practical notes

Binoculars are worth bringing, even though whales often come surprisingly close to the cliffs.
