eSIM support depends on your exact device model and sometimes your region. Here's how to find out in a few minutes whether your phone is ready — and what to do if it isn't.
iPhone: eSIM-capable from the iPhone XS onward
Every iPhone from the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR (2018) onward supports eSIM. That includes everything since: iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and newer, in every variant (Pro, Pro Max, Plus, mini).
One quirk: iPhones sold in the US from the iPhone 14 onward have no physical SIM slot at all — eSIM is mandatory there. iPhones sold in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland generally still keep a SIM slot alongside eSIM support (dual-SIM). If you bought your iPhone in the US, you can still use an eSIM for South Africa without any issue.
Samsung Galaxy: from Galaxy S20, but not every model
Samsung is a bit less clear-cut, since eSIM support varies by model and sometimes by sales region:
- Galaxy S series: S20 and newer (S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, S25) support eSIM.
- Galaxy Z series (foldables): Z Flip and Z Fold, all generations, support eSIM.
- Galaxy Note: Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra support eSIM.
- Galaxy A series (mid-range): Support is inconsistent — some newer A models (e.g. A54, A55) support eSIM in certain markets, but many older or cheaper models don't. Check your exact model if unsure.
Google Pixel: from Pixel 3 onward
Google Pixel 3 and every generation since (Pixel 4 through Pixel 9) support eSIM, though not equally unlocked in every sales market.
Check your phone in 30 seconds
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular → if "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan" appears, your device supports eSIM.
- Android: Settings → Connections (or Network & Internet) → SIM Manager → if there's an option to add an eSIM, it works.

Phone not eSIM-capable? Here are your options
If your phone doesn't support eSIM, you'll need a classic physical SIM card for South Africa — either an international roaming package from your home carrier, or a local prepaid SIM (Vodacom, MTN) bought right after landing at the airport.
